Judicial Process

The legal tribunal was advised that the violation took place during an military training at the training location, near the Hampshire area, in mid-2021.

The sergeant, a senior officer at the moment, initiated inappropriate contact towards Gunner Beck after an alcohol consumption while on duty for a training exercise.

Gunner Beck claimed the sergeant remarked he had been "seeking a chance for them to be in private" before making physical contact, holding her against her will, and attempting to force intimacy.

She filed a complaint against Webber following the violation, notwithstanding efforts by superiors to convince her against reporting.

An inquest into her suicide found the armed forces' response of the report played "a significant contributory part in her demise."

Family Statement

"She had faith people to defend her and post-incident, the confidence was lost. She was extremely troubled and terrified of the sergeant."

"I saw the difference personally. She felt vulnerable and abandoned. That assault shattered her trust in the set-up that was meant to safeguard her."

Court Ruling

When announcing the verdict, Judge Advocate General the magistrate remarked: "We have to consider whether it can be handled in a different manner. We are not convinced it can."

"We are satisfied the severity of the violation means it can only be resolved by prison time."

He told Webber: "The servicewoman had the bravery and wisdom to instruct you to cease and directed you to retire for the night, but you continued to the extent she believed she would remain in danger from you even if she returned to her assigned barracks."

He continued: "The subsequent morning, she disclosed the assault to her relatives, her companions and her chain of command."

"Subsequent to the allegations, the military unit decided to handle the situation with minimal consequences."

"You underwent questioning and you accepted your behavior had been inappropriate. You wrote a written apology."

"Your military service proceeded without interruption and you were subsequently elevated to Warrant Officer 1."
