The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin stated his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was poised to be a candidate among three competing for the role of Irish president, alongside TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

However, on Sunday evening he announced through a declaration that he "committed an error which did not align with his character and his personal standards."

"After weighing these points, I have decided to withdraw from the presidential race right away and go back to my family," he stated in his announcement.

Additional details to come.
