Top-Flight Headlines: Mejbri Suspended for Spitting; Guardiola Says 'Defence Has to Improve'

In the latest top-flight news, a notable midfielder was handed a substantial suspension, a head coach has singled to a player's mistakes to make a point, and Pep Guardiola has demanded backline betterment following an erratic victory.

1. Mejbri Issued Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty

Burnley's midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-match suspension and a ÂŁ15,000 penalty following misconduct during a recent match against Leeds United. The governing body said the player faced an independent regulatory commission following an incident of spitting towards visiting fans around the 67th mark during a 2-0 win for Burnley.

An FA statement said: “An independent disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct in their top-flight game against Leeds of 18 October. It was alleged that he behaved against the rules of football and/or in an improper way and/or engaging in offensive and unacceptable conduct by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters.”

The statement continued, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match ban and £15,000 after a hearing. The panel's written reasons for the sanction are to be released in due course.” Burnley, now in 19th place in the Premier League table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.

2. Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Make an Argument

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of seasoned players is not an issue at team, highlighting that defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from having poorly in a 3-1 loss to Leeds United.

Maresca, who oversees the youngest squad in the division, does not feel that mentality was a factor in their setback. He presented his case by singling out Tosin, the oldest outfield player in the lineup, after he produced a mistake-riddled display at the back.

“We always mention a lack of experience when we fail to win,” the coach stated. “After we beat Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, no one was mentioning older personnel. I know that when we don’t win, we are constantly looking for the reason why, but in my view why we didn’t win against Leeds was not down to the experience, it’s because we just weren't good enough.”

Maresca continued, “Who was the oldest one for us on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not up to standard.”

3. Guardiola Says Defensive Solidity 'Must Get Better'

Pep Guardiola has insisted his team have learnt from a recent scare at Fulham with the game has now been forgotten. The team survived to claim a 5-4 win in a remarkable encounter at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about 60 minutes played.

Coming after they fought off a comeback and won 3-2 in their prior fixture, it raised more questions about if City possess the defensive steel required to sustain a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” he commented. “Good lessons, I hope. At this level, at all the clubs, one must learn from what happens performances and bad things and focus on what's next.”

“Of course I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse what happened, to not concede so many goals. After conceding three by Leeds, and the five against Fulham it shows the two sides, correct? So, always we have done plenty of positive things. But how many attempts had Leeds have? Three? Scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts did Fulham ? Five, six? So our ratio of chances conceded we can see too high. We must improve.”

4. Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Deals

Newcastle United's recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has placed contract negotiations involving key backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list for the club. He joined after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and was reassured that midfielder Sandro Tonali has a deal extending to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson free to focus on talks with Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, Newcastle's talks are being treated with some importance.

“My first few days in the job was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation was significantly more secure than I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that we wishes to extend Tino’s contract and we wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are ongoing.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be missing Botman for the match with Burnley on Saturday, with the defender likely to remain out for a further period.

5. Nuno Says PaquetĂĄ Will Start Against Brighton

The Hammers' manager Nuno EspĂrito Santo has confirmed that Lucas PaquetĂĄ will return to the starting lineup for the side play Brighton on Sunday, having completed a ban following a red card against Liverpool.

“That incident is in the past,” Nuno said. “I am positive it will not be repeated because he personally acknowledged his mistake. We discussed it about it in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”

Nuno also understands the intense strain facing his team, who are 18th before the weekend matches. “We cannot avoid it,” he said. “It is the situation. We have to face it. We are battling for our top-flight status. We cannot hide it.”

6. Arteta Pleased with Striker Deputy Merino

The Spanish midfielder may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward even when the club's usual strikers are fit again. Merino has been deployed as a makeshift No 9 due to fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino found the net for the opener against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for the second goal in a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
